Abstract

In the course of the Cold War, architects, planners, and construction companies from socialist Eastern Europe engaged in a vibrant collaboration with those in West Africa and the Middle East in order to bring modernization to the developing world. Architecture in Global Socialism shows how their collaboration reshaped five cities in the Global South: Accra, Lagos, Baghdad, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait City. Lukasz Stanek describes how local authorities and professionals in these cities drew on Soviet prefabrication systems, Hungarian and Polish planning methods, Yugoslav and Bulgarian construction materials, Romanian and East German standard designs, and manual laborers from across Eastern Europe. He explores how the socialist development path was adapted to tropical conditions in Ghana in the 1960s, and how East European architectural traditions were given new life in 1970s Nigeria. He looks at how the differences between socialist foreign trade and the emerging global construction market were exploited in the Middle East in the closing decades of the Cold War. Stanek demonstrates how these and other practices of global cooperation by socialist countries-what he calls socialist worldmaking-left their enduring mark on urban landscapes in the postcolonial world. Featuring an extensive collection of previously unpublished images, Architecture in Global Socialism draws on original archival research in sixteen countries and a wealth of in-depth interviews. This incisive book presents a new understanding of global urbanization and its architecture through the lens of socialist internationalism, challenging long-held notions about modernization and development in the global South.

Abstract

'Juliaan Lampens 1950-1991' is the reissue of the catalogue published by the deSingel Arts Centre in 1991. The hand of the master is present in every facet of this publication, which makes this a unique reference work. In both a literal and figurative sense, Lampens helped shape the book: he selected the texts and images, wrote specifically for the publication and collaborated with the designer. Publications about Juliaan Lampens are scarce and highly sought after. Interest in the architect's oeuvre has only increased in recent years, including internationally, as demonstrated by the special edition of the renowned Japanese architecture magazine a+u that was devoted to Lampens. With this reissue, supplemented by an updated biography, the Flanders Architecture Institute is responding to an ever-growing demand. Previously untranslated texts are now provided in both French and English, thereby offering the reader three equivalent language editions in one volume.

Abstract

This book aims at contributing to contemporary investigations and discussions around Nordic Perspectives. It is a critical study concerning architectural history and theory and the significance of the legacy of Danish architectural master Jørn Utzon (1918-2008). Inside the book, the reader will find a selection of fourteen buildings and building complexes built in the second half of the 20th century critically re-addressed through drawings, physical models, and academic essays developed alongside a series of teaching and research activities. Seven of these projects were selected due to their relationship with an import of architectural production to Denmark, while the remaining seven are significant due to an export of architectural production from Denmark, relating to the fact that a large part of Utzon’s practice took place abroad.

Abstract

Cloud ’68 – Paper Voice pays homage the radical architecture movement in Europe from the 1950s to the 1970s, which initiated numerous new forms of experimental expression. A selection of 177 graphic pieces – lithographs, drawings, original etchings, and ephemera from the personal collection of the Chilean architect Smiljan Radić—reveal the scope of the diverse architectural approaches from those years. Works by Constant, Utopie, Guy Debord, Asger Jorn, Haus-Rucker-Co, Archigram, and Superstudio, among others, are displayed in 33 panels that recall Aby Warburg’s ‘Mnemosyne Atlas’. The publication is complemented by interview fragments by the critic and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, who interviewed the protagonists of this architectural movement, plus three essays by Tom McDonough, Moisés Puente and by Lara Schrijver.

Abstract

Zaida Muxí's "Beyond the Threshold" is a revised account of the history of architecture and urban planning through the contributions of the women who have been silenced in our general histories. With the built environment as its frame of reference, the book explores topics from design to politics, examining both the house and the city, the private and the public. As in other areas of knowledge, the arts, science, and politics, women have been and are still not represented on equal terms, or even fairly, based on equal merits. For this reason it is crucial to revisit and deconstruct the dominant historiography of architecture and cities, rewriting it with women as its protagonists.
